Chinese Quince Bonsai – Pseudocydonia Sinensis in Erin Pot

A beautiful Chinese Quince bonsai (Pseudocydonia sinensis) with elegant branching, attractive seasonal foliage and the distinctive exfoliating bark that makes this species particularly desirable among bonsai enthusiasts.

Chinese Quince can develop exceptional character as it matures. Its changing foliage, delicate flowers, potential fruit and increasingly textured bark create a tree that offers a very different appearance throughout the seasons.

About This Chinese Quince Bonsai

This individual specimen is presented in a quality Erin bonsai pot, complementing the established structure and character of the tree.

The bonsai was repotted in spring 2025 and later professionally styled by John Armitage in late autumn, helping refine its movement, branch structure and overall bonsai design.

Distinctive Exfoliating Bark

The bark is one of the standout characteristics of a mature Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai tree.

As the tree ages, sections of older bark can naturally peel away, revealing attractive variations in colour and texture beneath. This process can give established Chinese Quince trees an increasingly mature and characterful appearance.

During winter dormancy, the absence of foliage exposes the trunk and branch structure, allowing the developing bark to become a major feature of the bonsai.

Seasonal Flowers, Foliage & Fruit

Chinese Quince provides excellent seasonal interest.

Fresh foliage emerges during spring and develops into attractive green leaves throughout the growing season. Established trees can also produce delicate spring flowers which, following successful pollination, may develop into distinctive golden-yellow ornamental fruit.

As autumn arrives, the changing foliage provides another seasonal display before the leaves fall and the tree enters its natural winter dormancy.

Chinese Quince Bonsai Care

Pseudocydonia sinensis should be grown as an outdoor bonsai tree, where it can experience the natural changing seasons.

Position the tree somewhere bright with good natural light and airflow. Some protection from extreme summer heat and strong drying winds can be beneficial.

Water thoroughly during the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. The growing medium should also remain free draining to prevent the roots from sitting permanently wet.

Careful pruning and ongoing training can be used to maintain the established design and encourage increasingly fine branching as the tree continues to mature.

A Professionally Styled Chinese Quince

The combination of changing seasonal foliage, developing bark, flowers and potential fruit makes Chinese Quince a rewarding species for a bonsai collection.

This individual specimen is particularly complemented by its Erin bonsai pot and has benefited from professional styling by John Armitage, adding useful provenance alongside the natural qualities of the tree.
