Chinese Quince Bonsai Tree – Pseudocydonia Sinensis

A beautifully developed Chinese Quince bonsai tree (Pseudocydonia sinensis), admired for its elegant structure, seasonal transformation and distinctive exfoliating bark.

Chinese Quince is a superb species for bonsai, becoming increasingly characterful as it matures. Its combination of attractive foliage, spring flowers, potential ornamental fruit and developing bark creates a tree with interest throughout the changing seasons.

About This Chinese Quince Bonsai

This individual Pseudocydonia is planted in a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot, providing a traditional presentation that complements the tree's established structure and natural character.

The tree was repotted in spring 2025 and subsequently professionally styled by John Armitage in late autumn, refining its branch structure, movement and overall composition.

Beautiful Exfoliating Bark

One of the most desirable characteristics of a mature Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai is its developing bark.

As the tree ages, older sections of bark naturally exfoliate, revealing attractive variations in colour and texture underneath. This process can give an established Chinese Quince an increasingly mature appearance and provides visual interest even when the tree is without foliage.

During winter dormancy, the exposed trunk, bark and branch structure become prominent features of the bonsai.

Seasonal Flowers, Foliage & Fruit

Chinese Quince provides an attractive changing display throughout the growing year.

Fresh foliage emerges during spring, with established trees also capable of producing delicate seasonal flowers. Following successful flowering and pollination, distinctive golden-yellow ornamental fruit may develop.

As the seasons progress, the foliage changes before falling naturally as the tree enters its winter dormancy.

Chinese Quince Bonsai Care

Pseudocydonia sinensis is an outdoor bonsai tree and should remain outside where it can experience the natural changing seasons.

Position the tree somewhere bright with good natural light and airflow. Some protection from extreme summer heat and strong drying winds can be beneficial.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. Good drainage is equally important, so the roots should not remain permanently saturated.

Careful pruning and ongoing training will help maintain the existing design while encouraging increasingly fine branching as the tree continues to develop.

Professionally Styled Pseudocydonia Bonsai

Chinese Quince is particularly rewarding for bonsai enthusiasts because its appearance and character can continue to improve as the tree matures.

This individual specimen combines the desirable characteristics of Pseudocydonia sinensis with a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot and has benefited from professional styling by John Armitage.

Its changing foliage, distinctive bark, flowers and potential fruit make this a characterful addition to an established outdoor bonsai collection.
