Chinese Quince Bonsai – Pseudocydonia Sinensis

A characterful Chinese Quince bonsai tree (Pseudocydonia sinensis), prized for its distinctive exfoliating bark, elegant branching and excellent seasonal interest.

Chinese Quince is a highly regarded deciduous bonsai species that can become increasingly impressive with age. Its combination of attractive foliage, flowers, potential fruit and developing bark means the tree offers something different throughout the seasons.

About This Chinese Quince Bonsai

This individual Pseudocydonia sinensis is presented in a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot, complementing the established character and structure of the tree.

The bonsai was repotted in spring 2025 and later professionally styled by John Armitage in late autumn, helping refine its branch structure, movement and overall design.

Beautiful Exfoliating Bark

One of the standout characteristics of a mature Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai is its bark.

As Chinese Quince develops, older bark can naturally peel and flake away to reveal attractive colours and textures beneath. This gives the trunk increasing character and means the tree can remain visually interesting even during winter dormancy when its leaves have fallen.

Flowers, Foliage & Fruit

During the growing season, Chinese Quince develops attractive green foliage and can produce delicate spring flowers.

Following successful flowering and pollination, established trees can also develop ornamental golden-yellow fruit, creating a striking contrast against the foliage.

As a deciduous bonsai, the tree changes naturally throughout the year before entering winter dormancy and revealing its branch structure.

Chinese Quince Bonsai Care

Pseudocydonia sinensis should be grown as an outdoor bonsai tree, allowing it to experience the natural seasons.

A bright position with plenty of natural light and good airflow is ideal. During periods of extreme summer heat, some protection from intense sun and strong drying winds can be beneficial.

Water thoroughly during the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. At the same time, ensure excess water can drain freely from the bonsai pot.

Careful pruning and training can help maintain the existing design while encouraging finer branching and continued development as the tree matures.

A Distinctive Chinese Quince Specimen

Chinese Quince is an excellent choice for collectors looking for a bonsai that can continue developing character with age.

The combination of its Chinese Yixing pot, 2025 repot and professional styling by John Armitage gives this individual tree excellent provenance alongside the natural characteristics of the species.

The photographs show the actual Chinese Quince bonsai tree for sale, so you will receive this individual specimen rather than a stock example.
