Chinese Quince Bark & Character

One of the most appealing characteristics of Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai is the way the bark develops as the tree matures.

Older bark can naturally exfoliate and peel away, revealing attractive variations in colour and texture beneath. This creates an increasingly aged appearance and allows the trunk to become a major visual feature of the bonsai.

During winter dormancy, when the foliage has fallen, the exposed bark and refined branch structure provide a completely different view of the tree.

Flowers, Fruit & Seasonal Foliage

Chinese Quince offers changing interest throughout the growing season.

Fresh foliage emerges in spring, accompanied on established trees by attractive seasonal flowers. Following successful flowering and pollination, the species can produce distinctive golden-yellow ornamental fruit.

The foliage continues to change as the growing season progresses before the tree naturally enters winter dormancy.

Chinese Quince Bonsai Care

Pseudocydonia sinensis is an outdoor bonsai tree and should remain outside throughout the year to experience the natural changing seasons.

A bright position with good airflow is ideal. During particularly hot weather, some protection from extreme midday sun and strong drying winds can be beneficial.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. Good drainage is equally important, so the roots should not remain permanently saturated.

Careful pruning and continued training can be used to preserve the established design while encouraging increasingly fine branching as the tree matures.

Professionally Styled Pseudocydonia Bonsai

The combination of exfoliating bark, seasonal foliage, flowers and potential ornamental fruit makes Chinese Quince bonsai particularly rewarding as they mature.

This individual specimen is enhanced by its Chinese Yixing bonsai pot and has been professionally styled by John Armitage, adding provenance and refinement to an already characterful tree.
