Chinese Quince Bonsai Tree – Pseudocydonia Sinensis

A beautiful Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai tree, commonly known as Chinese Quince, prized for its distinctive bark, elegant structure and changing seasonal appearance.

Chinese Quince is an outstanding species for bonsai, developing increasing character as it matures. One of its most recognisable features is the attractive exfoliating bark, which gradually reveals different colours and textures and gives established specimens a wonderfully aged appearance.

About This Chinese Quince Bonsai

This individual Chinese Quince is presented in a quality Erin bonsai pot, complementing the character and structure of the tree.

The bonsai was repotted in spring 2025 and was subsequently styled in late autumn by bonsai expert John Armitage, helping refine its structure, movement and overall presentation.

Exfoliating Bark & Seasonal Interest

One of the defining characteristics of a Chinese Quince bonsai is the beautiful bark that develops as the tree matures.

The exfoliating surface creates changing colours and textures across the trunk and branches, providing visual interest even when the tree has lost its leaves during winter dormancy.

During the growing season, Chinese Quince produces attractive green foliage and can develop delicate spring flowers. Mature trees may subsequently produce distinctive golden-yellow fruit, adding another dimension to the tree's seasonal appearance.

Chinese Quince Bonsai Care

Pseudocydonia sinensis should be grown as an outdoor bonsai tree, where it can experience the natural changing seasons and winter dormancy.

Position the tree somewhere bright with good natural light. Some protection from extreme summer heat and strong drying winds can be beneficial, particularly when grown in a bonsai pot.

Water thoroughly during the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. Good drainage remains important and watering should always be adjusted according to the weather and growing conditions.

Careful pruning and training can be used to maintain the established structure while encouraging increasingly fine branching as the tree develops.

A Characterful Chinese Quince Specimen

Chinese Quince is particularly appealing to collectors because its character can continue to improve with age. The combination of exfoliating bark, seasonal foliage, flowers and potential fruit means the tree can provide a very different appearance throughout the year.

This individual specimen is further complemented by its Erin bonsai pot and has benefited from being styled by John Armitage, adding valuable provenance to the tree.

For anyone looking for a distinctive Chinese Quince bonsai tree with established character and excellent future potential, this Pseudocydonia sinensis would make an impressive addition to an outdoor bonsai collection.
