Chinese Quince Bonsai – Pseudocydonia Sinensis

A striking Chinese Quince bonsai (Pseudocydonia sinensis) with refined branching, attractive seasonal foliage and the distinctive exfoliating bark that makes this species particularly sought after by bonsai enthusiasts.

Chinese Quince is an excellent species for creating mature, characterful bonsai. As the tree develops, its bark, branch structure and seasonal changes become increasingly prominent, giving the specimen a different appearance throughout the year.

About This Chinese Quince Bonsai

Distinctive Chinese Quince Bark

One of the characteristics that makes Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai trees so appealing is their developing bark.

As the tree matures, sections of older bark naturally exfoliate, revealing attractive variations in colour and texture underneath. This process gives the trunk increasing character and can create the impression of considerable age.

During winter dormancy, when the foliage has fallen, the bark and refined branch structure become major features of the bonsai.

Seasonal Flowers, Foliage & Fruit

Chinese Quince offers changing interest throughout the growing year.

Fresh foliage emerges during spring and develops into attractive green leaves. Established specimens can also produce seasonal flowers which, following successful pollination, may develop into distinctive golden-yellow ornamental fruit.

As autumn approaches, the tree undergoes another seasonal transformation before losing its leaves and entering winter dormancy.

Chinese Quince Bonsai Care

Pseudocydonia sinensis is an outdoor bonsai tree and should remain outside where it can experience the natural changing seasons.

A bright position with good airflow is ideal. Some protection from extreme summer heat and strong drying winds can be beneficial.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season, taking particular care during warm weather. Avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely while ensuring the growing medium remains free draining.

Careful pruning and continued training can help preserve the established structure while encouraging increasingly fine branching as the tree matures.

A Professionally Styled Pseudocydonia Bonsai

With its combination of exfoliating bark, seasonal foliage, flowers and potential ornamental fruit, Chinese Quince provides excellent character throughout the year.

This individual specimen is presented in a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot and has benefited from professional styling by John Armitage, adding provenance and refinement to the tree.
