Quality Cotoneaster Bonsai – Over Rock Style

A charming and characterful Cotoneaster bonsai, beautifully developed in an attractive over-rock style that creates the appearance of a mature tree growing naturally across rugged stone.

This compact specimen combines delicate foliage, fine branching and an established rock composition to create an attractive miniature landscape with plenty of character despite its relatively small size.

Cotoneaster is an excellent species for bonsai, offering interest throughout the seasons. Under the right conditions, the tree produces small flowers followed by colourful berries, providing another dimension to the display as the year progresses.

Its manageable size and forgiving nature make Cotoneaster an appealing choice for newer bonsai enthusiasts, while the existing structure and potential for further refinement will also appeal to more experienced collectors.

This particular tree was repotted in 2025 into a high-quality glazed Chinese Yixing bonsai pot and measures approximately 28cm × 20cm.

Cotoneaster Bonsai Care

Position:
Keep outdoors in full sun to partial shade. Good levels of sunlight help support compact growth, flowering and subsequent berry development.

Watering:
Water thoroughly when the surface of the growing medium begins to dry. Check regularly during warm weather and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely.

Feeding:
Feed regularly throughout spring and summer with a suitable balanced bonsai fertiliser.

Pruning:
Prune after flowering where appropriate and trim extending shoots during the growing season to maintain the established shape and encourage finer branching. If you want the tree to produce berries, avoid removing all spent flowers immediately after flowering.

Repotting:
Repot approximately every 2–3 years, depending on root development and soil condition, using a good-quality, free-draining bonsai soil mix.

Winter Care:
Cotoneaster is generally hardy, but bonsai pots provide less root protection than growing in the ground. Protect valuable specimens from severe or prolonged frost.
