Kotohime Japanese Maple Bonsai – Root Over Rock

A distinctive Kotohime Japanese Maple bonsai trained in the traditional root-over-rock style, combining the naturally compact characteristics of Kotohime with an impressive exposed root and stone formation.

Acer palmatum ‘Kotohime’ is highly regarded for bonsai cultivation due to its naturally small leaves, short internodes and compact growth. These characteristics make it particularly well suited to creating refined bonsai with convincing proportions and increasingly fine ramification.

Root-Over-Rock Kotohime Bonsai

The defining feature of this individual tree is its established root-over-rock design.

The exposed roots have been trained to grow across and around the natural stone before reaching the growing medium below. This creates the appearance of a mature Maple establishing itself within a rugged landscape.

The combination of exposed roots, natural rock and delicate Maple foliage creates an attractive contrast and gives this individual bonsai plenty of character.

About This Kotohime Maple Bonsai

This individual Kotohime is planted in a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot, providing a traditional presentation that complements the tree and natural stone.

The bonsai was repotted in early spring 2025, providing fresh growing conditions for its continued development.

Why Kotohime Is Ideal for Bonsai

Kotohime is particularly popular with Japanese Maple bonsai enthusiasts because of its naturally compact characteristics.

Its small leaves and short internodes help create excellent proportions, while careful pruning and development can produce the fine branching and ramification associated with more refined bonsai.

The foliage also provides changing seasonal interest, giving the tree a different appearance as it progresses through spring, summer and autumn before entering winter dormancy.

Kotohime Bonsai Care

Kotohime is an outdoor bonsai tree and should be allowed to experience the natural changing seasons.

Position the tree somewhere bright and sheltered, with protection from intense midday summer sun and strong drying winds. Japanese Maple foliage can be delicate, particularly during periods of hot weather.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely.

Considered pruning and training will help maintain the established root-over-rock composition while encouraging increasingly fine branch development as the tree matures.

A Distinctive Japanese Maple Bonsai

The combination of Acer palmatum ‘Kotohime’ and traditional root-over-rock styling makes this a particularly interesting Japanese Maple specimen.

Its exposed roots and natural stone provide permanent structure and character, while the compact foliage and seasonal colour of Kotohime transform the tree throughout the growing year.

Presented in a quality Chinese Yixing pot and repotted in early spring 2025, this is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a Kotohime bonsai, Japanese Maple bonsai or established root-over-rock bonsai tree.
