Old Pyracantha Bonsai Tree – Fruiting Firethorn

A beautiful old Pyracantha bonsai tree, commonly known as Firethorn, offering excellent year-round character with compact evergreen foliage, delicate seasonal flowers and its spectacular display of colourful berries.

Pyracantha is particularly popular for bonsai because it combines naturally small leaves and dense branching with flowers and fruit. On an older specimen, these characteristics are complemented by an increasingly mature trunk and established branch structure, creating the appearance of a much larger tree in miniature.

About This Pyracantha Bonsai

This individual specimen is an established fruiting Pyracantha bonsai that was repotted in early spring 2025 and is currently growing strongly and healthily.

Species: Pyracantha
Common Name: Firethorn
Type: Fruiting and flowering outdoor bonsai
Repotted: Early spring 2025
Features: Mature character, white flowers, orange-red berries and compact foliage
Position: Outdoors
Experience Level: Suitable for beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts

Spectacular Orange-Red Berries

One of the standout features of a Pyracantha bonsai tree is its colourful seasonal fruit.

Following successful flowering and pollination, clusters of berries develop and mature into striking orange-red shades. Against the compact green foliage, these berries can create a spectacular display and provide colour well beyond the main growing season.

For collectors looking specifically for a fruiting bonsai tree, Pyracantha is an excellent species to consider.

White Flowers & Seasonal Interest

Before the berries develop, Pyracantha produces clusters of small white flowers, providing another completely different appearance earlier in the growing season.

This progression from foliage to flowers and then colourful berries means a well-developed Firethorn bonsai can provide changing interest across much of the year.

Even outside the flowering and fruiting periods, the established trunk and branch structure of an older specimen continue to provide character.

Pyracantha Bonsai Care

Pyracantha is an outdoor bonsai tree and should be positioned somewhere with plenty of natural light and good airflow.

Good light is particularly important for healthy growth, flowering and subsequent berry production.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely, particularly during warmer weather. At the same time, ensure the growing medium remains free draining.

Pyracantha responds well to careful pruning and training, making it possible to maintain the established design while encouraging increasingly fine branching.

Be aware that Pyracantha naturally develops thorns, so care should be taken when pruning, wiring or handling the tree.

A Characterful Old Firethorn Bonsai

With its combination of established character, compact foliage, white flowers and vibrant berries, this individual Pyracantha bonsai offers considerably more than foliage alone.

Its ability to provide different visual features throughout the seasons makes Firethorn an attractive choice for both established bonsai collections and enthusiasts looking for their first flowering or fruiting specimen.

Repotted in early spring 2025 and currently growing strongly, this is a distinctive old Pyracantha ready for continued development and enjoyment.
