Chinese Quince Bonsai Tree – Pseudocydonia Sinensis

A refined Chinese Quince bonsai tree (Pseudocydonia sinensis) displaying the elegant structure, seasonal interest and distinctive bark that make this species such an attractive choice for established bonsai collections.

Chinese Quince develops increasing character as it matures. Its combination of attractive foliage, spring flowers, potential fruit and naturally exfoliating bark means the appearance of the tree continues to change throughout the year.

About This Chinese Quince Bonsai

This individual specimen is planted in a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot, providing a traditional presentation that complements the character and structure of the tree.

The bonsai was repotted in spring 2025 and subsequently professionally styled by John Armitage in late autumn, refining its branch structure, movement and overall composition.

Exfoliating Bark & Developing Character

One of the most distinctive features of Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai is the bark that develops as the tree matures.

Older sections of bark naturally begin to peel and exfoliate, revealing different shades and textures beneath. Over time, this can create a beautifully aged appearance across the trunk and established branches.

The effect becomes particularly prominent during winter dormancy, when the leaves have fallen and the structure and bark of the bonsai become the main focus.

Chinese Quince Flowers & Fruit

During spring, established Chinese Quince can produce attractive flowers alongside fresh seasonal growth.

Following successful flowering and pollination, the species can also develop distinctive golden-yellow fruit, creating an unusual feature and additional seasonal interest.

The foliage develops throughout the growing season before changing as autumn approaches and eventually falling as the tree enters its natural winter dormancy.

Chinese Quince Bonsai Care

Pseudocydonia sinensis is an outdoor bonsai tree and should be allowed to experience the natural changing seasons.

Position the tree in a bright outdoor location with good natural light and airflow. Some protection from extreme summer heat and strong drying winds can be beneficial.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. The growing medium should remain free draining and the tree should not be left permanently waterlogged.

Ongoing pruning and considered training will help preserve the established design while encouraging increasingly fine branch development as the tree continues to mature.

Professionally Styled Pseudocydonia Bonsai

Chinese Quince is particularly rewarding for collectors because its character can continue to develop significantly with age.

This individual specimen combines the natural qualities of Pseudocydonia sinensis with a quality Chinese Yixing pot and has benefited from professional styling by John Armitage.

Its combination of seasonal foliage, flowers, potential fruit, developing bark and refined structure makes it an attractive addition to an established outdoor bonsai collection.
