Pseudocydonia Sinensis Bonsai Tree – Chinese Quince

An impressive Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai tree, commonly known as Chinese Quince, with elegant branching, attractive seasonal foliage and the distinctive exfoliating bark for which mature specimens are particularly prized.

Chinese Quince is an excellent species for bonsai cultivation and can develop considerable character as it ages. From fresh spring growth and delicate flowers through to autumn colour and textured winter bark, this is a tree that offers changing interest throughout the year.

About This Chinese Quince Bonsai

This individual Chinese Quince is planted in a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot, creating a traditional presentation that complements the character of the tree.

It was repotted in spring 2025 and subsequently professionally styled by John Armitage in late autumn, refining the tree's structure, movement and overall bonsai design.

Distinctive Chinese Quince Bark

The developing bark is one of the characteristics that makes Pseudocydonia sinensis particularly attractive as a bonsai.

As the tree matures, sections of older bark can naturally exfoliate to reveal different colours and textures beneath. This creates an increasingly aged and characterful appearance across the trunk and established branches.

During winter dormancy, when the leaves have fallen, the bark and branch structure become major features of the tree in their own right.

Seasonal Flowers, Foliage & Fruit

Chinese Quince provides a changing display throughout the growing season.

Fresh foliage emerges during spring, while established trees can produce attractive flowers. Following successful flowering and pollination, the species can also develop distinctive golden-yellow ornamental fruit.

As autumn arrives, the foliage changes before falling naturally as the tree enters its winter dormancy.

Pseudocydonia Sinensis Bonsai Care

Chinese Quince should be maintained as an outdoor bonsai tree, allowing it to experience the natural changing seasons.

Choose a bright outdoor position with good natural light and airflow. Some protection from extreme summer heat and strong drying winds can be beneficial.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season, taking particular care during periods of warm weather. The root ball should not be allowed to dry completely, while the growing medium should remain free draining.

Considered pruning and training will help preserve the existing design while encouraging increasingly refined branching as the bonsai continues to mature.

A Characterful Chinese Quince Bonsai

With its combination of seasonal foliage, flowers, potential fruit and increasingly distinctive bark, Chinese Quince bonsai can become more visually interesting as they mature.

This individual specimen is further enhanced by its Chinese Yixing bonsai pot and professional styling by John Armitage, giving the tree useful provenance alongside its established bonsai character.
