Pseudocydonia Sinensis Bonsai – Chinese Quince

A striking Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai, better known as Chinese Quince, combining beautiful seasonal foliage with distinctive bark and an elegant, mature appearance.

Chinese Quince is a highly regarded species for bonsai cultivation. As the tree develops, its bark can begin to exfoliate and reveal attractive patches of colour and texture, creating increasing character with age.

The bonsai was repotted in spring 2025 and subsequently styled in late autumn by bonsai expert John Armitage, helping refine its branch structure, movement and overall balance.

Chinese Quince Flowers, Fruit & Foliage

A Chinese Quince bonsai tree provides changing interest throughout the growing season.

Fresh foliage develops into attractive glossy green leaves, while established trees can produce delicate flowers during spring. Following successful flowering and pollination, Chinese Quince can also develop distinctive golden-yellow fruit.

As autumn approaches, the foliage can provide further seasonal colour before falling as the tree enters its natural winter dormancy.

Distinctive Exfoliating Bark

One of the characteristics that makes Pseudocydonia sinensis particularly desirable for bonsai is the bark that develops as the tree matures.

Older bark naturally flakes and peels away, revealing different colours and textures beneath. This can give an established Chinese Quince considerable visual character even during winter, when the leaves have fallen and the trunk and branch structure are fully exposed.

Chinese Quince Bonsai Care

Chinese Quince is an outdoor bonsai tree and should experience the natural changing seasons.

Position the tree in a bright location with good natural light and airflow, providing appropriate protection during periods of extreme summer heat and strong drying winds.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. Good drainage is equally important, particularly when maintaining an established specimen in a bonsai pot.

Considered pruning and training can be used to maintain the established design while encouraging increasingly fine branching as the tree continues to mature.

A Refined Pseudocydonia Bonsai

The combination of seasonal foliage, flowers, potential fruit and increasingly characterful bark makes Chinese Quince an excellent species for a more established bonsai collection.

This individual specimen is presented in a Chinese Yixing bonsai pot, was repotted in spring 2025 and has been professionally styled by John Armitage, adding useful provenance to the tree.
