Pseudocydonia Sinensis Bonsai – Chinese Quince

A striking Pseudocydonia sinensis bonsai, commonly known as Chinese Quince, with elegant branching, attractive seasonal foliage and the distinctive exfoliating bark that makes this species so highly regarded in bonsai.

Chinese Quince is a rewarding species that develops increasing character as it matures. Its combination of spring growth, flowers, potential fruit, autumn interest and textured bark provides a constantly changing display throughout the year.

About This Pseudocydonia Bonsai

This individual Chinese Quince is presented in a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot, complementing the established form and natural character of the tree.

The bonsai was repotted in spring 2025 and later professionally styled by John Armitage in late autumn, helping refine its movement, branch structure and overall balance.

Distinctive Exfoliating Bark

The developing bark is one of the defining characteristics of a mature Chinese Quince bonsai tree.

As the tree ages, older sections of bark can naturally exfoliate, gradually revealing attractive variations in colour and texture beneath. This process can give established Pseudocydonia an increasingly aged and refined appearance.

During winter, when the tree enters dormancy and loses its leaves, the trunk, bark and established branch structure become prominent features in their own right.

Seasonal Foliage, Flowers & Fruit

Chinese Quince provides a variety of seasonal interest throughout the growing year.

Fresh foliage appears during spring and develops into attractive green leaves. Established trees can also produce spring flowers which, following successful pollination, may develop into distinctive golden-yellow ornamental fruit.

As autumn approaches, the tree undergoes another seasonal transformation before eventually losing its leaves and entering winter dormancy.

Pseudocydonia Sinensis Bonsai Care

Chinese Quince should be grown as an outdoor bonsai tree, allowing it to experience the natural changing seasons.

Choose a bright position with good natural light and airflow. During periods of extreme summer heat, some protection from intense sun and strong drying winds can be beneficial.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season, particularly during warm weather, and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. The growing medium should remain free draining.

Careful pruning and continued training will help maintain the established design while encouraging increasingly refined branching as the tree develops.

A Professionally Styled Chinese Quince

With its changing foliage, distinctive bark and potential for both flowers and ornamental fruit, Pseudocydonia sinensis offers excellent year-round character for an outdoor bonsai collection.

This individual specimen is further complemented by its Chinese Yixing bonsai pot and has benefited from professional styling by John Armitage, adding provenance alongside the natural qualities of the tree.
