Quality Pyracantha Bonsai – Over Rock Style

A striking Pyracantha bonsai, beautifully developed in an impressive over-rock style, with the tree naturally interacting with the rugged stone to create the appearance of an established tree growing within a miniature landscape.

Also known as Firethorn, Pyracantha is an excellent bonsai species thanks to its characterful growth, attractive foliage and changing appearance throughout the seasons. Delicate flowers can be followed by vibrant berries, providing additional colour and interest later in the year.

This particular specimen features a characterful trunk, textured bark and well-developed foliage, while the rock composition gives the tree additional movement, maturity and visual impact.

The tree was repotted in 2026 into a high-quality glazed Chinese Yixing bonsai pot and measures approximately 33cm × 33cm.

Pyracantha Bonsai Care

Position:
Keep outdoors in full sun to partial shade. Good sunlight will help encourage compact growth, flowering and berry production.

Watering:
Water thoroughly when the surface of the growing medium begins to dry. During warmer weather, check moisture levels regularly and avoid allowing the root system to dry out completely.

Feeding:
Feed regularly throughout the active growing season using a balanced bonsai fertiliser.

Pruning:
Prune following flowering where appropriate and trim extending shoots to maintain the tree's established silhouette and encourage finer growth. If you want to encourage berries, take care not to remove all flowering growth immediately after blooming.

Repotting:
Repot approximately every 2–3 years, depending on root development and the condition of the growing medium, using a high-quality free-draining bonsai soil.

Winter Care:
Pyracantha is relatively hardy, but established bonsai should be given protection from severe or prolonged frost, particularly around the root system.
