Quality Pyracantha Bonsai – Over Rock Style

A striking Pyracantha bonsai, carefully developed in an attractive over-rock style, with the tree's roots and trunk naturally interacting with the rugged stone beneath.

Pyracantha, commonly known as Firethorn, is particularly valued as a bonsai species for its year-round interest. Attractive foliage and characterful bark are complemented by delicate flowers followed by vibrant berries, creating a tree that can change dramatically throughout the seasons.

The over-rock composition gives this particular specimen additional age, movement and visual interest, making it an unusual addition to a bonsai collection with plenty of potential for continued refinement.

This tree was repotted in 2026 into a high-quality glazed Chinese Yixing bonsai pot and measures approximately 29cm × 26cm.

Pyracantha Bonsai Care

Position:
Position outdoors in full sun to partial shade. Good levels of sunlight will help encourage healthy growth, flowering and berry production.

Watering:
Water thoroughly when the surface of the growing medium begins to dry. During warm weather, check the tree regularly and avoid allowing the root system to dry out completely.

Feeding:
Feed regularly throughout the active growing season with a balanced bonsai fertiliser.

Pruning:
Prune following flowering where appropriate and trim extending shoots throughout the growing season to maintain the established silhouette. Consider the development of berries before heavily pruning flowering growth.

Repotting:
Generally repot every 2–3 years, depending on root development and soil condition, using a free-draining bonsai growing medium.

Winter Care:
Pyracantha is relatively hardy, but a valuable potted specimen should be protected from severe or prolonged frost, particularly around the root system.
