Trident Maple Bonsai Tree – Root Over Rock

A striking Trident Maple bonsai tree trained in the traditional root-over-rock style, combining powerful exposed roots, natural stone and the beautiful seasonal character for which Trident Maples are renowned.

Acer buergerianum, commonly known as Trident Maple, is one of the most popular deciduous species used for bonsai. Its vigorous growth, relatively small leaves and ability to develop fine ramification make it particularly well suited to creating impressive, mature-looking bonsai specimens.

Root-Over-Rock Trident Maple Bonsai

The defining feature of this individual tree is its established root-over-rock formation.

Powerful exposed roots have been trained to follow the contours of the natural stone before reaching the growing medium below, creating the appearance of a mature tree that has established itself in a rugged landscape.

As the tree continues to develop, the relationship between the roots, rock, trunk and branch structure will become an increasingly important part of the overall composition.

About This Trident Maple Bonsai

This individual Trident Maple is planted in a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot, providing a traditional presentation that complements the natural rock and structure of the tree.

The bonsai was repotted in spring 2025 and subsequently professionally styled by John Armitage in late autumn, refining its branch structure, movement and overall design.

Trident Maple Seasonal Colour

One of the attractions of a Trident Maple bonsai is the changing appearance it provides throughout the seasons.

Fresh foliage emerges during spring and develops through the summer growing season before producing attractive autumn colours that can include shades of yellow, orange and red.

Following leaf fall, the exposed root-over-rock formation, trunk and branch structure become the main focus during winter dormancy.

Trident Maple Bonsai Care

Trident Maple is an outdoor bonsai tree and should experience the natural changing seasons throughout the year.

Position the tree somewhere bright with good natural light and airflow. Some protection from extreme summer heat and strong drying winds can be beneficial, particularly when grown in a relatively shallow bonsai pot.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. Good drainage remains important, so the roots should not be left permanently saturated.

Trident Maples respond well to careful pruning and training, allowing increasingly fine ramification and a more refined branch structure to develop over time.

A Professionally Styled Root-Over-Rock Bonsai

The combination of Acer buergerianum and traditional root-over-rock styling creates a bonsai with excellent structure and year-round character.

Its exposed roots and natural stone provide a strong permanent feature, while the changing foliage transforms the appearance of the tree throughout the growing season.

Presented in a quality Chinese Yixing pot, repotted in spring 2025 and professionally styled by John Armitage, this is a distinctive specimen for anyone looking for a Trident Maple bonsai with established character.
