Trident Maple Bonsai Tree – Root Over Rock

A distinctive Trident Maple bonsai tree (Acer buergerianum) trained in the traditional root-over-rock style, creating a powerful composition of exposed roots, natural stone and refined deciduous foliage.

Trident Maple is one of the most popular species for bonsai development thanks to its vigorous growth, attractive three-lobed leaves and excellent potential for fine ramification. As the tree matures, these characteristics can create the convincing appearance of a much larger, established tree in miniature.

Root-Over-Rock Bonsai

The standout feature of this individual Trident Maple is its established root-over-rock formation.

Strong exposed roots have been trained to travel across and around the natural stone before reaching the growing medium below. This creates a dramatic appearance inspired by mature trees growing in rocky landscapes.

The exposed roots and stone remain an important visual feature throughout the year, becoming particularly prominent when the tree loses its foliage during winter.

About This Trident Maple Bonsai

This individual specimen is planted in a quality Chinese Yixing bonsai pot, complementing the established root structure and natural stone.

The tree was repotted in spring 2025 and subsequently professionally styled by John Armitage in late autumn, refining its branch structure, movement and overall composition.

Trident Maple Seasonal Colour

A Trident Maple bonsai provides a changing display throughout the growing season.

Fresh foliage emerges during spring before developing into the characteristic three-lobed green leaves of Acer buergerianum. As autumn approaches, the foliage can develop attractive shades of yellow, orange and red.

Following leaf fall, the tree enters winter dormancy and its trunk, refined branch structure and dramatic root-over-rock formation become the main focus.

Trident Maple Bonsai Care

Trident Maple should be maintained as an outdoor bonsai tree, allowing it to experience the natural changing seasons.

Position the tree in a bright outdoor location with good airflow. Some protection from extreme summer heat and strong drying winds can be beneficial, particularly during warmer periods.

Water thoroughly throughout the growing season and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. The growing medium should remain free draining and the roots should not be kept permanently saturated.

Trident Maple responds particularly well to careful pruning and training, allowing increasingly fine ramification and refined branch structure to develop over time.

Professionally Styled Acer Buergerianum Bonsai

The combination of Acer buergerianum and established root-over-rock styling makes this a particularly characterful deciduous bonsai.

Its powerful exposed roots and natural stone provide permanent structure, while the changing seasonal foliage transforms the appearance of the tree throughout the year.

Presented in a quality Chinese Yixing pot and professionally styled by John Armitage, this individual Trident Maple offers both established character and excellent potential for continued refinement.
